Brief

For this assignment, I was asked to select an everyday object and visually document three ways of reading or using the object. I chose a leftover can of Italian tomatoes as my object and explored three ways to repurpose it. I come from an Italian family who cooks as an act of love (and truly values quality tomatoes.

I illustrate three personas faced with the task of repurposing the can: the chef, the decorator, and the artist. Each persona finds a creative way to make the object useful once again in their everyday lives. I created a “color palette” for each piece which reflects the context of each repurposing.

in the studio

the artist

An artist turns the can into a container for paint brushes. Paint splatters form the color palette in the most literal representation of the three pieces.

in the home

the decorater

A creative person looking to bring more beauty in their home transforms the can into a makeshift flower pot. Flowers form the color palette.

the chef

A chef’s repurposing of the can as a holder for kitchen utensils. Staple Italian ingredients form the color palette.
